首爾歷史博物館爲整理並展示首爾的歷史和傳統文化，加深對首爾的理解和認識，同時爲來首爾的國內和外國人提供感受和體驗首爾文化的機會，於2002年5月21日開館。
建築總面積20882㎡，建築面積7448㎡，地下1層和地上3層規模，收藏有18萬件以上的首爾相關文物。
主要收藏品有《大東輿地圖》（寶物第850-2號）、《東輿圖》（寶物第1358-1號）、《龍飛御天歌卷第3~4》。
（寶物第1463-2號），李夏應肖像一攬子（寶物第1499-1號），《韓浩筆跡-石峯韓浩楷帖》
（寶物第1078-3號）等23件寶物及朝鮮末期代表性肖像畫家石智錄用信（1850~1941）的肖像畫，
雲峴宮文物、大韓民國臨時政府相關文物等。
另外，下設清溪川博物館、漢陽都城研究所（漢陽都城博物館）、東大門歷史館、京橋莊、白仁濟家屋等分館，管理首爾市內主要遺址和文物。
